I’ve been trying to find motivation and inspiration wherever I can lately. It came from an unexpected source earlier this afternoon: the last question of an interview on a popular weblog.
The writers of a blog I read regularly called FreelanceSwitch (it’s an excellent resource for anybody looking to do freelance anything) were recently interviewed by another blog. The interviewer, Adriaan, asked them if they had any tips for other freelancers.
Collis’ response was very motivational and I decided to stick it somewhere where I could see it regularly, but didn’t want it to be a goofed-up index card with Sharpie scribbled across the front. So I made it pretty. It’s good to exercise typographic muscles. Now it’s posted up on my magnetized white board so that I can see it every time I look up from my sketchbook. Just something to keep me motivated to do my best work; I have the tendency to be lazy.
It’s still index card sized, though. Four inches by six inches, specifically.
Click the image to see what it looks like in full, or if you’d like to print one out for yourself, feel free to download the PDF (right-click>save as). I actualy paraphrased Collis’ words and edited them for grammar; the new version goes something like:
Think of every job as the job by which your entire career will be judged.
Forget about the limitations of the job (e.g. their logo is ugly or the client has bad taste); instead, see the limitations as parameters in a problem that you are going to best.
Push yourself this way and you will do great work of which you will be proud.
I liked it, anyway.

Hey Vincent,
Thanks for your response over at freelance switch. I like your site, keep up the good work. I also like that quote a lot, and the image looks really cool. I’ve saved it as my background and i’ll probably keep it there for a while.
Hey I think you might find some interesting stuff over at my site. I’d like to hear what you have to say considering your background. Feel free to email me or just leave a comment on my site with any suggestions as to site design, over all content, and layout. It would be much appreciated.
